A dominant two-way player in the first professional baseball league in Great Britain history, the British-born John Devey not only led the league in batting but also paced the circuit in wins on the mound. His performance powered his club, Aston Villa, to a 17-8 record and a league championship. The 1890 National League of Professional Base Ball Clubs of Great Britain was the only pro circuit in British history with a national scope. The league featured two former Major Leaguers, four former or future American minor leaguers and a host of other players with considerable experience in the United States. Nevertheless, the Birmingham-born Devey emerged as the top all-around player. At bat, he registered a .428 batting average and tallied the first-ever six-hit game in British baseball history. As a pitcher, his 13 victories set a single-season record that stood for many years. Moreover, when he was not pitching, Devey anchored the Villa's defence as the team's shortstop. Beyond his baseball exploits, Devey is arguably one of the greatest all-around athletes to have competed on the diamond in Great Britain. He captained the mighty Aston Villa Football Club between 1893 and 1901 - a stretch in which the squad claimed five English league championships and two FA Cup titles. He also played football for England and was a regular for the Warwickshire county cricket team.
